Washington Latin Public Charter School's Girls Varsity Basketball forward Elayna Birch-Smith signs the National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play NCAA Division I basketball at Delaware State University. The 6-3 senior is the first student in the history of Washington Latin Athletics to sign an NLI to play collegiate athletics for a Division I program. Birch-Smith signed her NLI during the initial signing day period and committed to the Hornets on November 10th 2017.
Today the Washington Latin Athletics Department hosted an unofficial/mock signing for Birch-Smith to celebrate this fantastic achievement. Neil Berment, Latin's Athletic Director recognized Elayna both for her academic and athletic achievements. Berment took a moment to congratulate her family and to read the stipulations of the NLI to the large crowd on hand to witness this moment. "I am extremely proud of her achievements as a student-athlete." said Berment. "You have been positioning yourself to succeed for a very long time, and now you are one step closer. You have made your entire Latin community very proud." Berment also congratulated the family of Elayna who has been extremely supportive of the Latin Athletics Department at Washington Latin. "I am happy, and excited for Elayna and I am very grateful to all who contributed to Elayna's development" quoted her mother, Postelle Birch-Smith.
Sitting alongside Elayna was her mother, Steward her father and younger brother Aaron. Elayna's current and former coach, Latin's Head of School, Peter Anderson and Principal Diana Smith, her teachers, her teammates, as well as a few other family members and friends were all in attendance in the Latin's College Counseling Office.
As the Athletic Department continues to foster a positive environment for student athletes to succeed, we hope that Elayna is the first of many others to ink letters of intent to play interscholastic sports at top schools.
You can see Elayna and the Girls Varsity Basketball team as they are competing in the finals of the St. Andrews Basketball Tournament in Potomac, MD. They face St. Andrews tomorrow in the finals at 2pm.
