Latin Tennis Student Athletes Shine at DCSAA State Championships!
The Washington Latin PCS Athletics Department has much to be proud of. For the first time, the department has added a Latin tennis team consisting of eight student athletes. Julian Salazar is the Head Coach of the program.
On Tuesday May 15th, the team traveled to the first day of the District of Columbia State Athletic Association state tournament to compete for championships. Tuesday's matches featured Latin's Boys and Girls singles as well as Girls Doubles. For the Boys and Girls singles, Daud Gannt-Bey and Alicia Campbell both won their matches. The Girls' Doubles team of Jada George and Ajania Thaxton lost their opening round of matches and are out of the tournament.
Here are the results from today's matches:
Daud Gannt-Bey def. Tyler Harris, Banneker (8-0)
Alicia Campbell def. Raven Bias, McKinley Tech (8-2)
Clare/Bonner, Visitation def. Thaxton/George (8-0)
Daud dominated his opponent, moving him around the court at will and punishing him with crushing shots. Tomorrow he will play at 3:30 pm. Alicia was the better player in her match-up and showed it on the court. She will play at 4:15 pm tomorrow. The team of Jada George and Ajania Thaxton had a difficult draw and were up against one of the top girls' tennis teams. They were able to get a couple serves in and score some points, but in the end the tournament was more about the experience for them.
Tomorrow Boys' Doubles Max Regardie/Will Monti (pictured) and Ketan Mampara/Miles Tiller, will join the singles players at the tournament.
