Announcements and Important Events
The rescheduled Student Athlete Alumni Night, originally scheduled for Thursday January 4th, was hosted last evening on the Washington Latin PCS premises inside the Martha C. Cutts gymnasium. Despite the interruption by the snow day last Thursday, Director of Athletics Neil Berment, moved ahead and re-invited former student athletes of Washington Latin to be honored in between the boys and girls basketball games vs Somerset Prep last evening, January 11th.
Berment’s focus was to not only have the former athletes return to the Lion’s Den to be honored, but to show the current student athletes that there several others that laid the foundation for them. The 19 student athletes who were present to be honored, were greeted by the boys and girls varsity basketball teams and the varsity cheerleading team, as well as to the packed audience on hand to witness the event.
“Washington Latin is happy that you have returned home to be with us this evening” Berment said. “As student athletes, appreciated your commitment, your efforts and your energies to both your academics and athletics. We value the time you put in in the classrooms and in/on the field of your respective sport. Thank you for all that you have done for Latin!” Berment ended, before presenting them their tokens.
As their names were called one by one, the alums ran through the cheerleading tunnel and was greeted by Berment. As he shook their hands, hugged them and presented them with their T-Shirt, he said “thank you for all you have done for Latin Athletics, welcome home!”
The event hosted by Neil Berment and the Department of Athletics, had a great deal of support from Mrs. Crystal Eleby El, Director of Admissions. Mrs. Eleby El was very instrumental in getting the information out to the alumni, who she is often in communication with. Without her department’s support, this event would not have been possible.
As the former Lions sat in the stands after the presentation, we were excited to see them in their Latin Athletics tees, as they were treated to a great contest on the evening by the basketball teams and the cheerleaders.
Here is a note from Athletics Director Neil Berment, to the Student Athlete Alumni:
Dear Student Athlete Alumni,
It gave my department great pleasure to host you this evening at the first ever Student Athlete Alumni Night. We are happy you were able to attend, some of you with your families and friends, and allowed us to honor you for your time served as a student athlete at Washington Latin PCS.
As I took the helm of the Athletics Program in July 2017, one of my immediate objectives was to ensure that every current ‘student athlete’ understands what that title means. By you being here tonight, you have shown our current student athletes that they too can join you one day as alums. As athletes who were students first! You have set the standard for them, you have built the platform that they stand on today, and you have shown them that despite the challenges that you were faced with, you succeeded. Your former Coaches are as proud as I am today and you will forever continue to be a Latin Lion!
I also wanted to share that I too am grateful for the role my predecessor performed here. Former Athletic Director, Mr. Richard Bettencourt, who you all knew for the past ten years took this journey with you as I hope to do for our current student athletes. He has continued to serve as a mentor of mine as I am sure some of you one day will be to our current athletes. He is indeed proud of all that you have done while at Latin, and even now as alums!
Once again, thank you for accepting our invitation and attending the first ever Student Athlete Alumni Night in your honor! We hope that you will wear your token T-Shirt proudly and showcase your pride in being a Latin Lion.
For those of you that RSVP’D and were unable to make it due to the rescheduling of the event, we promise to get your token to you. We will be in touch to get the necessary details.
As we start plans for the next Student Athlete Alumni Night, please stay tuned and look forward to hearing from me soon. If I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours In Athletics,
Director of Athletics
